Weipa was originally developed by Comalco to mine the extensive bauxite deposits found on the western coast of Cape York. From the 1960's through to the early 1990's, Weipa was a "company town", closed to most people outside the mining industry.

Weipa has changed greatly over the past 10 years. It is now the vibrant centre for servicing Cape York.

In 2004, Rio Tinto invested billions of dollars into their Queensland operations by construction of a new refinery in Gladstone and major upgrade to the Weipa mining operations.

The Queensland government recently commenced negotiations to develop a new mine between Weipa and Arukuun. Weipa's mining future has never looked brighter.

The Queensland Government has moved many of their staff & services that were traditionally based in Cairns to Weipa to facilitate a more efficient supply of services to communities on Cape York.
